Aspen/Snowmass Shrines
Did you know there are more than 100+ shrines and plaques hidden amongst the runs on Aspen Mountain, Snowmass, Highlands and Buttermilk? We recently picked up a copy of the new book “Sanctuaries in the Snow” by David Wood that contains more than two hundred photographs of these mysterious shrines.
Kimberly Nicoletti in her February 18, 2006 Aspen Times Weekly article noted, “For about two decades, locals have been ducking into favorite hideouts on Aspen Mountain and nailing pictures, license plates, beads, silk flowers, wind chimes and other memorabilia to tree trunks in honor of their particular heroes.”
Which shrine have you visited? Some of the most popular shrines are the John Denver, Jerry Garcia, Elvis Presley and 9/11 shrines. The Buckaroo Shrine was created by The Bell Mountain Buckaroos. If you’re in Aspen on closing day, head over to the Ridge of Bell at 1 pm to ski “The Buck-Off”.
The “Boomer Shrine” is in the works. Our clinics will be making a stop at this new shrine and soon you will be part of the secret club who knows its’ location! Bring something along to add to the shrine.
Send us your best shrine pictures! We’ll select one to receive a copy of the book”Sanctuaries in the Snow”. Photos must be posted to the blog by March 15th.
