So, What Skis Are Good For Moguls?
I recently received a question from a student asking what skis he should use for moguls and I thought I’d share my answer. (Thanks for the question, Mike!)
85% of good skiing is about Good Technique. Your ability to have fun skiing moguls with control, precision and balance REQUIRES IMPROVING YOUR SKIING SKILLS. The remaining 15% you can buy/rent in a shop. Things like skis, poles, goggles, helmet, etc.
Buying or renting skis in and of itself will not improve your technique. But certain characteristics of a ski will likely help you learn new techniques faster. For optimum results we recommend an all-mountain ski, 80-88 underfoot width, 155-170 in length, with a softer flex. This profile will enhance your ability to learn quickly. This is not a one size fits all approach but a suggestion to make it easier to learn mogul and powder technique. You can use a longer ski if you choose, but longer skis are typically heavier, more difficult to turn and less nimble in the bumps when learning. Skis that are too stiff can create a rough and tumble ride in 3-dimensional terrain like moguls.
In summary, you do not need high performance skis to become a proficient mogul skier, you need Good Technique. Come ski with us in Bumps for Boomers and we’ll help you get there!
