control | balance | tactics
Learning how to ski moguls and how to ski powder - confidently and safely - is about three simple skills: control, balance and tactics.
Lets continue our journey to learn how to ski moguls and powder with a discussion of the second essential skill - how to ski with good balance.
Our observation is that most skiers have two balance problems that prevent them from successfully learning how to ski moguls and powder.
Problem 1: The Illusion Of Balance
You may be upright on your skis but that does not mean you are centered and in balance on your skis.
What we frequently observe is that a skier will be standing upright on their skis but is actually moving forward and backward so their legs are alternately touching the front and back of your boot cuffs - in a similar fashion as if you were walking down a dark, unfamiliar hallway and you were touching the walls for orientation.
Problem 2: Self-Destruction
Did you know that most skiers actually throw themselves out of balance when anxiety sets in?
Fast body movements, shoulder and hip rotation and flailing hands are guaranteed to result in an out of balance situation. And when you are learning how to ski moguls and powder these movements make your (out of balance) problem worse.
Relaxed and patient turns facilitate staying in balance. Consider this. If you begin a turn in balance, are patient - and don't do anything to throw yourself out of balance - you will finish a turn in balance. It's that simple. Less is more.
