Aspen's Smuggler Mine Tour and History

Aspen's Little Known Smuggler Mine

While thousands of locals and visitors hike up Smuggler Road year-round, few have taken a tour of the mine that lies beneath the road. Aspen was first founded as a mining town and it's population in 1887 was 3x what it is today.  In 1894 the largest silver nugget in the world was uncovered in the Smuggler Mine. Weighing 2,054 pounds and 93% pure silver, the nugget had to be broken into three pieces in order to be maneuvered up the mine shaft.

Local Pride and Proud Dad - Chris Klug Going to Vancouver!

It's hard to miss this giant banner hanging in front of the Aspen Square Condominium Hotel! Warren Klug, father of Chris Klug, is the general manager of the Aspen Square and wanted to make sure everyone knew that son Chris made this year's Olympic Snowboard team.

While Chris is too young to be a Boomer, at 37, this is most likely his last Olympic bid. Chris is the first person to win an Olympic medal after surviving a liver transplant. We are all inspired by his passion for life and his sport.

Ski Legend Klaus Obermeyer Is 90 Years Old Today

Today is Klaus Obermeyer's 90th Birthday. Happy birthday Klaus! Born in 1919 in Germany Klaus moved to Aspen during the winter of 1947-1948 (I was one year old). Founder of the Aspen Colorado clothing company, Sport Obermeyer, Klaus is an amazing role model for all of us. Klaus still skis virtually every day in the winter and plays tennis virtually every day in the summer.

However, when traveling, internet access is problematic because most airports chage a wireless access fee of from $7.95 to $9.95 per day. If you are planning an Aspen, Colorado vacation trip or in-transit to Aspen or actually in Aspen you now have a new and better option using your Blackberry or other wireless smartphone.

There are a lot places to purchase wine in Aspen but there is none better than "Of Grape And Grain" on Hopkins Avenue. What sets Of Grape And Grain apart is that everyone who works in the store has a passion for discovering terrific wines that sell for very affordable prices - with a large selection under $10 a bottle. This affordability, coupled with great customer service, makes Of Grape And Grain a favorite of Aspen locals.

If your preference is to go first cabin and uncork a Petrus, Margaux or Haut Brion they will be happy to sell you a first growth.
