You most likely saw the news of the huge rockslide that happened Sunday night along the stretch of I70 thru the Glenwood Canyon. The good news is that as of 3:30 this afternoon, they have re-opened one lane in each direction. There is a restriction on the width of vehicles - a 14 foot limit.
It's always interesting living in Aspen when mother nature brings these challenges. In 2004, a rockslide in the Glenwood Canyon closed I70 for several days and heavy snowstorms closed the Aspen airport. If you were in Aspen, you weren't going anywhere, and if you weren't in Aspen, you weren't getting here from the East. It's an interesting experience in this day and age of "on-demand travel". Maybe a good reminder that we aren't in control after all.
It's still snowing in Aspen and the mountains picked up another 18" this past week. But in another month, we hope to be cycling on the fantastic bike trail through the Glenwood Canyon. This paved trail parallels the Colorado River and I70. It's a great early season ride. Let's hope the boulders didn't affect it.
Meanwhile, we'll be grabbing some great Spring skiing in the next 4 weeks until the mountain close on April 11.
