Free Activities For Aspen/Snowmass 2009-2010 Ski Season

Print this pagePrint This Page

Having fun in Aspen or Snowmass need not be expensive. Here are nine winter things to do while you are in town that won't cost you a dime:

First Tracks
Guests who sign up with First Tracks at Aspen or Snowmass will be on the slopes before the lifts start running, meaning you will get to enjoy untracked powder and/or pristine groomers. To make sure you are first on the mountain, you will need to call and reserve a spot the night before. You will also need a lift ticket which must be purchased the day before since First Tracks begins before the daily lift tiket sales office opens. For reservations and details call 970-923-0560 (Snowmass) or 970-925-1220 x3543 (Aspen Mountain).

Mountain Tours
Take a free mountain-orientation tour with Ambassadors at each of the four mountains (Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk, Aspen Highlands and Snowmass).  Tours are provided for intermediate-level skiers and snowboarders at 10:30 am each morning. The ambassadors share a wealth of knowledge about the mountains, the resorts, and the surrounding town.

Coffee & Hot Cider
Skiers and riders can grab a free cup of coffee at the base of any of the four mountains. Once they're out on the slopes, guests can also stop at the top of designated lifts mid-morning to enjoy a free cup of hot cider.

On-Mountain Snowsports Events
Whether it's the X Games or a World Cup race, Aspen/Snowmass has an event that's sure to capture the interest of their guests this season. Events are scheduled for all four mountains and will feature today's best snowsports athletes. All events are free.

KickAspen Big Air Invitational
The KickAspen Big Air Invitational at Aspen Mountain is in its 11th year of showcasing the best ski and snowboard athletes in the region to compete under the lights at the base of Aspen Mountain on March 20.

Bud Light Hi-Fi Concert Series
Free Bud Light music concerts are held throughout the season and are scheduled to coincide with key events and peak weekends.

Aspen concerts dates for the 2009-2010 ski season are November 28th (2009), January 30 (2010) and March 26 (2010). Aspen concerts are held at the base of the Little Nell run.

Snowmass concert dates are February 14 (2010) and March 21 (2010). Snowmass concerts are held on the Fanny Hill run.

Bud Light Big Air Fridays
On March 19 and 26 you can enjoy the Big Air Friday competition at Snowmass. Held on Fanny Hill the 40 foot jump attracts a wide range of talent showcasing the freshest arial tricks around.

Red Bull Schneetag
The third annual Schneetag event (pronounced Sh-knee Tog) on March 27 invites teams of four to create a craft that they will pilot down Fanny Hill in Snowmass and attempt to float across a 75x20 foot pond. Every team has a theme and will perform a skit before they descend. This event is just as ridiculous and hilarious as it sounds.

Sing-A-Longs and Storytelling
Guests in search of family fun should check out the free Sing-A-Longs and Storytelling sessions at Pokolodi Lodge in Snowmass. Sing-A-Longs by the Campfire happen every Monday evening from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. throughout the winter. Storytelling by the Campfire occurs at the same time on Wednesdays. Guests will get to roast marshmallows, drink hot chocolate, and enjoy a true Colorado experience.

Hi Nancy

I like this part of your blog where you talk about other things to do in Aspen besides skiing (even though most have something to do with skiing) but why else would anyone be in Aspen in the winter???? Allison Prout (classmate social media marketing)

Aspen in Winter

Hi Allison - glad you found this information helpful. Yes, people primarily come to Aspen in the Winter for the skiing, but there are so many other activities to keep non-skiers busy. Of course there are lots of outdoor activities such as snow-shoeing, hiking, ice skating, snowmobiling and cross-country skiing. The Aspen Music Festival and Aspen Sante Fe Ballet continue their performances throughout the Winter, as does the Aspen Institute and Given Medical Institute. Aspen Writers Foundation has a series of author talks for 6 weeks, Anderson Arts Ranch offers art workshops. We have a number of Winter Festivals including WinterSkol and Gay Ski Week. And of course the X-Games is huge! And if that's too much activity, you can just stroll through town and enjoy the shopping and people watching. For a small town, Aspen is filled with world-class cultural activities.
