We hope your summer is going well and that you are starting to think about the upcoming ski season (which will be here sooner than you think). Aspen Mountain opens for the 2010-2011 season in just a little more than 4 months.
Here in Aspen we are gearing up for Winter and have some hot Summertime ski season savings for you. Keep reading to see how you can save up to $200.
Spring skiing has officially arrived with the move to daylight savings time this past weekend. You now need to be more strategic when planning your ski day. Warm days and cold nights increase the potential for crispy snow. The direction each run faces becomes important. And, the time of day needs to be factored into deciding which runs to ski.
Here are some ski planning guidelines for you to consider.
You most likely saw the news of the huge rockslide that happened Sunday night along the stretch of I70 thru the Glenwood Canyon. The good news is that as of 3:30 this afternoon, they have re-opened one lane in each direction. There is a restriction on the width of vehicles - a 14 foot limit.
While many of you want to get off groomed runs, there is a natural hesitation about jumping into those mogul fields! We know you don't want to get hurt and end up in physical therapy. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, so we offer this video clip of one of our students as an example of how to ski moguls slowly and with lots of control. Janice started the season skiing blue groomed runs and now, look at her go!
Aspen/Snowmass is offering special spring skiing deals to all Passholders from February 23 – March 7, 2010. For the next two weeks, Flex Passholder extension days have been lowered to $29 and Classic Passholder extension days are just $49.
Aspen/Snowmass Premier Passholders will receive one free demo at any Four-Mountain Sports location in Aspen or Snowmass Village.
For those of you who have been holding back on Aspen skiing due to it being perceived as a light snow year - those perceptions are now old. Snow has been dumping in Aspen for the last few days. Aspen Mountain has received 34 inches of white light fluffy powder in the last 7 days with 11 inches in the last 24 hours alone.
Here are the snowfall details - and you may want to bookmark this page if you are interested in following the daily Aspen Snow report: http://www.aspensnowmass.com/system/printable_report.cfm
Do you believe that a Boomer is skiing in the Olympics? Yes, it's true. Hohenlohe-Langenburg is a 51-year-old Mexican Alpine skier known as Andy Himalaya who grew up in Austria and currently lives in Liechtenstein.
He is descended from the reigning dynasty of a former principality in what is now Germany and is also a photographer, businessman and pop singer.
If you'd like to experience Aspen like a local, sign-up for the new "Adopt A Tourist" program. Visitors fill out a short questionnaire indicating their interests and preferences while in town, and then the City of Aspen will pair 'adoptees' with 'adopters'. Aspen Adopt A Tourist participants receive an ID card they can use around town for discounts and other special deals.
While thousands of locals and visitors hike up Smuggler Road year-round, few have taken a tour of the mine that lies beneath the road. Aspen was first founded as a mining town and it's population in 1887 was 3x what it is today. In 1894 the largest silver nugget in the world was uncovered in the Smuggler Mine. Weighing 2,054 pounds and 93% pure silver, the nugget had to be broken into three pieces in order to be maneuvered up the mine shaft.
We know that many of you would like to improve your mogul skiing technique and invest in skills to extend your skiing longevity. But, we also know that many of you are hesitant to make this investment given our current economy and are looking for Aspen spring break special deals. So, we're pleased to offer you a special one-time deal for two of our March mogul skiing clinics!
